Life is designed to be rich. Chocolate on chocolate dove bar rich. Decadent truffle dessert rich. God designed it that way. The problem is, if you’re anything like me, you have a hard time naturally enjoying that richness. It’s something about the way I’m wired. The term “stop and smell the roses” is a bit foreign to me because I’m usually a mile down the road by the time the scent of roses hits me. The beauty of nature and my surroundings literally has to slap me upside the face to catch my attention. I’m naturally inclined to plow through things and not notice what’s around me (which can also have its merits). When we bought our house years ago it took me a visit or two before I even noticed that we had rounded archways!
Darcey is just the opposite. She is naturally able to see and enjoy simple pleasures. The beautiful green of the trees in spring after they sprout leaves or the sweet smell of lilacs in April. I constantly marvel at the small details that she notices.
Lately the simple pleasures of life are becoming more apparent to me, but I have to be intentional about noticing them. We paid a visit to Wildfire in Schaumburg for my birthday and I made a point to soak in every moment. The ambiance of the 1940’s-ish decor with round booths and dim lighting added up to a great night. Darcey and I had some wonderfully good conversation. I felt full due to the really good meal and also felt full and satisfied in my soul.
1 Peter 3:10 talks of loving life and seeing good days. Jesus feasted and enjoyed life in Matthew 11:19 and it says that God “richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” in 1 Timothy 6:17. It’s easier to enjoy something that is rich! I’m personally starting to realize the process of savoring and enjoying the beauty of the moment and how that adds richness and depth to life.
Has your life felt dull and lacked color lately? Maybe you’re like me and need to stop and smell the roses a bit more! Enjoy some of life’s simple pleasures. Notice the beauty around you. Put aside your routine and spend some time enjoying loved ones. Ask God to help you notice and enjoy the beauty that’s right in front of you. He will add a richness and a depth to your life that is tangibly good!
